Dear Stakeholders:
In response to Philadelphia's Mayor Nutter's announcement of a One Hundred Eight Million Dollar deficit in the city budget due to the current economic crisis of the our nation, I have thought about, prayed about, and penned several suggestions that could help lessen the painful experience to come of cut backs to library services, pools, skating rinks, elimination of snow removal on tertiary (small) streets- all of which, will be devastating for our children, their families and the communities in which they reside. All of the Stakeholders are respectfully asked to please consider serving the children of Philadelphia in a way that may have never been done before. The following suggestions have a purpose to help close the gap in the above-mentioned services and provide hope to our youth, that they shall prevail, adults do care about their providing opportunities for their educational success. Let us show the children that they are loved in the following ways:
1. Stakeholders partner with your Churches, Synagogues and Local Schools:
a. Identify the children in your congregations and what are the local schools that each of them attend.
b. Identify which children do and do not have access to computers and Internet.
c. Identify and connect those families with computers and those without and try to build a deliberate partnership of sharing computer time in the home and in the churches that may have computers or space for sharing computers.
d. Survey and Indentify teachers that may need to restructure lessons plans do to the coming close of libraries. Demonstrate willingness to work with teachers on restructured homework assignments.
2. Stakeholders partner with your Employers or business relationships:
a. Identify employers or businesses that may have excess computers, books, periodicals, office space that may be willing to donate to school age children during after-school hours for their study us. Partner with businesses and identified schools who need access to these materials for school age children.
3. Stakeholders partner with your Community centers:
a. Identify local community centers, day centers, senior centers that may have space available to share with school age children during after school hours( 2 -7 pm.)
b. Provide partnerships between the centers and schools to give access to homework study assistance during after -school after hours.
c. Provide volunteers to local community centers, day care centers, and seniors centers to manage care for school age children.
4. Stakeholders partner with your Neighbors
a. Survey and identify which neighbors on your block have computers and Internet access. Stakeholders and Neighbors with these tools are asked to commit to 1 day a week to share their computer and Internet access with a school age child on your block, in your neighborhood, to assist with homework and study skills for the child.
5. Stakeholders partner with Neighbors deliberately to provide snow removal on your blocks and assist parents getting young children to school safely, when school is open, while snow is being shoveled.
Stakeholders, these are just a few things listed to help ease the burden of loss of city funding to children. You may have other ideas and needs for your specific community. Because what has been suggested is for city-wide consideration and use, each area may decide to do more. However, these are just some basics examples of leadership, caring, and putting our complaints aside – pitching in doing what we can help each rise above tide. Stay focused, we can do it. “Yes we can!”
